Teaching Methods

In every grade, teachers collaborate on integrating curriculum so students can examine ideas from different perspectives. For example, students might explore a certain time period, such as the Civil War, in social studies. In language arts, they might read The Red Badge of Courage. And in music, they would study 19th century American folk songs.

Teachers use a wide variety of teaching methods to meet each child’s learning needs. Our students encounter many different learning strategies on any given day:

They may participate in group reading, guided reading or guided writing.

Children frequently work at different “learning centers” within their classrooms, where they complete different types of tasks—some individually, some in groups, some visual, audible or tangible.

Students use technology as a tool (rather than an end unto itself) to learn how to research and express ideas.
